Shame

I feel ashamed that I might be part of the problem.

I feel shame because humanity is destroying our biosphere. People can feel either individual or “species shame” because of climate damage. It is important to resist being paralyzed by shame. If we can speak about it, our shame can direct us towards acting in accordance with our values.

Question: How could we transform climate shame into energy for more honorable lifeways?

Action

Choose progress over perfection

You do not have to be perfectly sustainable. Notice one habit you would like to change and start there, without judging yourself. You could borrow instead of buy, waste less food, speak up, or simply learn more.

Where climate shame comes from

It is easy to feel like every choice you make is being measured. But most people live within systems that do not always offer sustainable options. Shame can make us shut down; curiosity can help us make more realistic changes.

Learn

Nobody does this perfectly

Other young people forget reusable bottles, buy things they do not need, take flights, and make imperfect choices too. Their stories can help replace shame with a more realistic idea: care, learn, adjust, and keep going.
