Gratitude

I feel grateful for Earth and everyone who has made an effort to protect it.

Gratitude is a living thing’s essential orientation toward the many pleasures of being alive. We can also cultivate gratitude for our awareness of the truth, and even for climate pain, which reminds us of our connection to all of existence.

Daily practice of gratitude can give strength even in dire circumstances. It coexists with, and informs, other climate emotions such as moral outrage.

Question: What can you be grateful for right now, in this moment?

Action

Appreciate it—and care for it

Think about something in nature or your community that you are grateful for. Spend time there, photograph it, help clean it up, thank someone who cares for it, or find a small way to help protect what you value.

Gratitude can strengthen connection

Climate conversations often focus on what we could lose. Gratitude reminds us to notice what is here now: people, places, animals, traditions, and experiences we value. That connection can give us another reason to care.

A favorite beach, a shady tree, a family garden, clean air after rain—people connect with the Earth in personal ways. Their stories can help you notice the places and experiences that make you feel grateful too.
