Grief

I am mourning all these losses related to climate change.

Climate grief is very common. It can be related to global news of climate change or its local manifestations that we are personally experiencing. It’s crucial to engage with the tasks of grief and give them time: to accept the reality of losses and to adjust to our changing reality.

Question: What must be mourned, and what are the constructive tasks in climate grief?

Action

Give grief somewhere to go

You can express climate grief instead of pushing it away. Write, draw, make a playlist, create something, attend a community event, plant something meaningful, or spend time in a place that reminds you why you care.

Climate grief is real

Grief is not only about losing a person. We can grieve changing landscapes, disappearing species, damaged communities, or futures we imagined. Naming that grief can help us understand why climate change feels so personal.

Grief can be shared

Many people are grieving changes to places, animals, seasons, and communities they love. Hearing their stories can help you put words to your own feelings and see how grief can exist alongside connection and action.
