Loneliness

It feels like no-one else cares so deeply.

Solitude is the neutral or positive state of being alone; loneliness is feeling disconnected, alienated or misunderstood by others, whether or not you are around other people.

It is very common to feel loneliness because of your climate emotions and attitudes. This may happen because of a lack of public recognition of climate emotions in your community or because the feelings associated with climate change seem too dark to share with friends or family. The good news is that climate feelings in fact are widespread, and if you start to name them, it is likely you will find others who feel the same way. Try climate psychology organizations or groups as a place to start.

Question: How, and to whom, can I speak aloud what I’m feeling?

Action

Find one person to connect with

You do not need a huge group. Start with one friend, teacher, family member, club, or online community you trust. Ask how they feel about climate change, share what is on your mind, or do something together.

Why climate loneliness happens

It can feel lonely to care deeply about climate change when people around you do not talk about it. Sometimes others are worried too but do not know how to start the conversation. Speaking up can open that door.

Learn

Find people who get it

Young people everywhere are trying to make sense of climate change and the emotions that come with it. Their stories can remind you that your feelings are shared, even if the people closest to you do not always talk about them.
